In connection with the Annual Celebration of Aarhus University in September, the university confers five honorary doctorates on researchers from institutions with whom the university enjoys particularly close and valued research collaborative relationships. These working relationships include research, teaching and professional networks, and contribute to establishing strong links between Aarhus University and cutting-edge international research.
The honorary doctorate title is the highest academic degree Aarhus University offers. It is awarded to researchers of the highest international recognition and impact.
Aarhus University offers the title to five researchers each year, one from each faculty (Æresdoktorer på Aarhus Universitet). Each faculty is in charge of strengthening the ties and connections with the honorary doctorates.
To expand the knowledge and collaboration to all faculties at Aarhus University, each new honorary doctorate is offered a fellowship at the Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies; an AIAS Honorary Doctorate Fellowship, from 2025.
AIAS offers a strong international and collaborative research environment, which spans all faculties and research areas at Aarhus University.
AIAS coordinates the fellowship with the respective faculty and department each doctorate is connected to, to ensure that the fellowship is of mutual benefit to both the Honorary Doctorate and to the relevant research community. AIAS can help organize events, talks and other related activities.
Prior to the conferring of the new Aarhus University Honorary Doctorates in September each year, AIAS will contact the doctorates with the fellowship offer.
If the Honorary Doctorate accepts a fellowship, the planning of the visit will be made in collaboration with the relevant faculty/department.
Expenses in connection to the Honorary Doctorate Fellowship will be covered by AIAS and the respective faculty.
