Three Science Diplomacy Theme Group Fellows selected to AIAS
Following a successful year of the first Science Diplomacy theme group of fellows, three AIAS-SD fellows have been selected to join a second theme group that will continue addressing ‘Science Diplomacy’ from diverse perspectives. They will start at AIAS on 1 September 2026, joining two fellows from the first Science Diplomacy group.
The global societal challenges and the unstable geopolitical situation have not diminished since the start of the first group of science diplomacy fellows at AIAS in September 2025. Therefore, cooperation and bridging understanding between institutions, countries and regions are still crucial. For this, the development of a strong, research-based field of science diplomacy is important to ensure that strategies for science diplomacy are based on strong research foundations.
The three newly selected AIAS Science Diplomacy Fellows will bring to AIAS new expertise to address key challenges in science diplomacy, and together with two current Science Diplomacy fellows continue to broaden and improve the knowledge of how, why and on what grounds science diplomacy operates.
The selected AIAS Science Diplomacy Fellows commencing on 1 September 2026 are:
- George Salter, Danish Centre for Studies in Research and Research Policy, Department of Political Science, Aarhus University
Project at AIAS: ‘Technological interdependencies and value mobility in the Danish quantum computing ecosystem’ - Rachele Pierini: Saxo Institute, University of Copenhagen
Project at AIAS: ‘Diplomacy Designers: Bottom-Up Practices in Building Digital Humanities Research Infrastructures’ - Sonam Kinga, Royal Institute of Governance and Strategic Studies, Bhutan
Project at AIAS: ‘From a Hot Spot to a Hope Spot – Science Diplomacy and Bhutan’s Survival Between India and China’
AIAS Science Diplomacy Fellows who will continue their projects are:
- Rachel Fishberg, The Danish Centre for Studies in Research and Research Policy, Department of Political Science, Aarhus University
Project at AIAS: ‘The Role of Universities in Science Diplomacy: Institutional Dimensions and Academic Practices’ - Casper Andersen, School of Culture and Society, History of Ideas, Aarhus University & Science Diplomacy theme group lead at AIAS.
Project at AIAS: ‘Dual use and diplomacy in science’
The new AIAS-SD Fellows will be based at AIAS and be part of the international, interdisciplinary community of fellows at AIAS. They will join an engaging Science Diplomacy theme group that is active in organising workshops, conferences and publications on the topic of Science Diplomacy. From 1 July 2026 two of the current AIAS-SD Fellows will be co-chairs of the European Union Science Diplomacy Alliance with member institutions from Europe and globally.
