Special journal issue on Imaginative Geographies of Home

New concepts of home are explored in the special journal issue ‘Imaginative Geographies of Home: Ambivalent Mobility in Twenty-First Century Literature and Culture’ edited by AIAS Former Fellow Dorothee Birke (University of Innsbruck) and collaborator Stella Butter (University of Koblenz-Landau), a result of their 2017 AIAS symposium.

In the special issue ‘Imaginative Geographies of Home: Ambivalent Mobility in Twenty-First Century Literature and Culture’ of the journal Literary Geographies published in January 2020, AIAS Former Fellow Dorothee Birke (University of Innsbruck) and Professor Stella Butter (University of Koblenz-Landau) bring together two aspects of home studies. Firstly, the notion of “mobility”, which stands in a productive tension to “home”, and secondly, the specific contribution that contemporary cultural productions, namely literature and other media, make to understanding what home means to us right now. Accordingly, the corpus of the special issue comprises literature, graphic novels, photography and film.

The special issue is a result of the symposium Mobilizing Home(s): New Approaches to the Study of Home in Contemporary Literature and Culture held at AIAS in September 2017 and organized by AIAS fellow at that time Dorothee Birke in collaboration with Stella Butter, University of Koblenz-Landau.
