Six AIAS-Tandem Visiting Fellows appointed

A new AIAS-Tandem fellowships programme enables AIAS Associate fellows from Aarhus University to invite a researcher from abroad to explore novel research avenues across disciplines. The first will join in October 2023.

In the first round of applications, six AIAS Associate fellows from Aarhus University have been awarded an AIAS-Tandem fellowship. This new Tandem programme supports the meeting of researchers across disciplines by bringing together an AIAS Associate fellow from Aarhus University and an international research colleague from different research fields to jointly explore new horizons. The Associate fellow and the tandem partner from abroad will have a shared office at AIAS for a period from two weeks up to three months.

Multi-omics and molecular insights into Bacillus methanolicus

On 16 October 2023, the first Tandem Visiting Fellow will commence, Luciana Fernandes de Brito from the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology who will collaborate with AIAS Fellow Marta Irla from the Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering at Aarhus University.

Together they will analyse previously generated genomic and transcriptomic datasets of Bacillus methanolicus mutants to decipher the regulation of L-glutamate biosynthesis in the bacterium Bacillus methanolicus. The aim is to enhance knowledge on methanol bioconversion to L-glutamate and γ-aminobutyric acid in the bacterium Bacillus methanolicus and provide molecular insight into plasmid-based bioproduction in this bacterium. Luciana Fernandes de Brito is an expert in transcriptome analysis and will also lead a one-day introductory seminar on differential transcriptome analysis during her visit.

The six selected AIAS-Tandem Visiting Fellows and their Aarhus University partner – and a short description of their project:

  • Luciana Fernandes de Brito, Department of Biotechnology and Food Science, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway
Aarhus University collaborator and AIAS Associate Fellow:
Marta Irla, Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering, Aarhus University
Marta Irla and Luciana Fernandes de Brito will analyse previously generated genomic and transcriptomic datasets of Bacillus methanolicus mutants to decipher the regulation of L-glutamate biosynthesis in B. methanolicus.
Time of visit: 16 October to 2 November 2023.
  • John NA Brown, School of Computing at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland
Aarhus University collaborator and AIAS Associate Fellow:
Lukas Esterle, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Aarhus University
John NA Brown and Lukas Esterle will collaborate to develop a computer architecture based on the neurophysiology of the human brain. They will further explore computational mechanisms and algorithms, enabling the different processes.
Time of visit: 6 November to 24 November 2023.
  • Sheina Lew-Levy, Department of Psychology, Durham University
Aarhus University collaborator and AIAS Associate Fellow:
Felix Riede, Department of Archaeology, School of Culture & Society, Aarhus University
Time of visit: 8 December to 22 December 2023.
During the AIAS-Tandem Visiting Fellowship, Sheina Lew-Levy and Felix Riede we will be working towards an application to the British Museum’s scheme supporting the documentation and collection of endangered material culture (https://www.emkp.org/) with a specific focus on children’s material culture in the still extant hunter-gatherer communities spread across the globe.
  • Elitzur A. Bar-Asher Siegal, Department of Hebrew Language, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel
Aarhus University collaborator and AIAS Associate Fellow:
    Rebekah Baglini, Department of Linguistics
Elitzur A. Bar-Asher Siegal and Rebekah Baglini will continue our multi-year collaboration developing a theoretical framework for modeling causal expressions in natural language, using Structural Causal Models.
Time of visit: 14 January to 1 February 2024.
  • Barbara Zecchi, Film Studies Program, University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA
Aarhus University collaborator and AIAS Associate Fellow:
Alan O’Leary, Department of Media and Journalism Studies, Aarhus University
Barbara Zecchi is one of the world’s most energetic practitioners of the video essay as a means of thinking. She will join Alan O’Leary at AIAS to investigate the possibilities of the video essay for interdisciplinary collaboration and advanced enquiry.
Time of visit: 8 April to 26 April 2024.
