'Science Diplomacy and Transnational History: 'Explorations in US, China, and Europe Scientific Interactions from the Cold War to the Present'
This talk explores two related approaches in studying international scientific relations, science diplomacy and transnational history, through examinations of cases in Chinese scientific exchanges with the US and Europe from the Cold War era to the present, including those in the areas of climate change, nuclear weapons, and talents cultivation. Besides state-sponsored science diplomacy, this study also highlights the roles of transnational, non-governmental scientists and scientific institutions, including Chinese American scientists, the Niels Bohr Institute, and Aarhus University, in facilitating Chinese international scientific and technological interactions.
About the speaker
Zuoyue Wang is a distinguished historian of science at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. His research explores the intersections of science, politics, and diplomacy in modern China and the United States. Among his important contributions is his acclaimed book In Sputnik’s Shadow: The President’s Science Advisory Committee and Cold War America (2008).
