Movie Nights: Unraveling Mexico. Part one.
"La ley de Herodes" (1999) opens a three-part Luis Estrada film series at AIAS, showcasing bold and satirical perspectives in contemporary Mexican cinema.
Through sharp satire and dark humor, this series explores layered Mexican realities: the everyday mechanics of power, the interplay of media and politics, class and regional divides, and how people navigate scarcity, corruption, and crime. Directed by Luis Estrada, whose films openly critique Mexico’s political system and its controversies, the series aims to spark discussion about social complexity and human relations.
Experience the first of Luis Estrada’s three cinematic works: La ley de Herodes (1999)
In the 1940s, a small town loses three mayors in quick succession to citizen uprisings. A naïve janitor is recruited as the new mayor, convinced he will modernize the town and bring peace. The system has other plans, and good intentions bend into something entirely different.
Post-screening discussion and refreshments will conclude the evening.
