Fellow's op-ed about Romania's lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic on Cultures of History Forum

AIAS Fellow and historian Bogdan C. Iacob has published an op-ed about Romania's lockdown on the website "Cultures of History Forum" created by the institute of advanced study, the Imre Kertész Kolleg Jena.

Bogdan C. Iacob's contribution offers an expat perspective on recent developments in Romania during the pandemic. He argues that the ambiguities and heavy-handedness of the government's response to the crisis are rooted in long-standing problems of post-socialist governance. He also points to the central role of survival practices developed by the population over the past thirty years in the context of its endemic suspicion of state authorities. They allowed people to navigate the trouble waters of the lock-down despite administrative breakdowns and the absence of reliable social-economic safety-nets.
