In this presentation I will take you on a microscopic tour of tissues found throughout the body that are impacted by HIV/SIV infections through different stages of disease. I will discuss the histologic tools utilized to understand the anatomic and cellular structures in tissues and the immunopathology associated with AIDS virus disease.  

In addition, I will discuss new sensitive next-generation in situ hybridization approaches that begin to provide additional insight into viral persistence, reservoir establishment, tissue compartmentalization and reservoir phenotype in their local in vivo environment and how they provide a deeper understanding of the reasons why HIV and SIV are capable of residing within specific organ structures without being destroyed by the host immune system.

My laboratory’s primary research areas:

• understanding the causative processes and pathological consequences of chronic inflammation and immune activation in AIDS virus infections
• understanding the impact of inflammation and immune activation on the process of viral establishment and persistence in vivo
