AIAS Book Launch: Simulating the Complexity of Societies with Agent-Based Modelling

By Iza Romanowska, AIAS Fellow

Info about event

Thursday 16 September 2021,  at 15:00 - 17:00

AIAS Auditorium and online

To fully understand not only the past but also the trajectories of human societies, we need a more dynamic view of human social systems. Agent-based modelling (ABM) creates fine-scale models of behaviour over time and space, which reveal important, general patterns of human activity.

During the event, we will discuss the role, potential and challenges involved in using computational modelling for studying complex systems in their social, natural, and physical contexts. A short seminar by the author will be followed by a discussion panel with invited speakers and a wine reception.

Agent-Based Modeling for Archaeology is the first ABM textbook designed for researchers studying the human past. Appropriate for scholars from archaeology, history, the digital humanities, and other social sciences. This textbook provides the foundations needed to simulate the complexity of past human societies, offering researchers a richer understanding of the past—and likely future—of our species.

15:00 - 15:30: Talk by author Iza Romanowska, AIAS COFUND Fellow at the Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies, Aarhus University.

15:30 - 16:00: Panel discussion with Felix Riede, Professor at the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies, Aarhus University, and Associate Fellow at the Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies; and Arthur Hjorth, Assistant Professor at the Department of Management, Aarhus University.

16:00 - 17:00: Continued discussions and networking with refreshments and snacks in the AIAS Hall.

The event is open to all and free of charge. The talks from 15:00 -16:00 are held hybridly, online and in the auditorium. For online participation no registration is necessary.

To participate in both the auditorium and the reception, registration is required by 14 September 2021

Deadline: 14 September 2021.
