Aegean Connections Podcast on Archaeology, History and Culture of the Aegean Bronze Age
AIAS fellow Ester Salgarella is out with a sixth episode in her podcast series Aegean Connections. This most recent episode explores the textile industry and its tools of the Aegean peoples in her interview of Dr. Sophia Vakirtzi of Greece’s Hellenic Ministry of Culture.
The Aegean Connections podcast series takes listeners into fascinating archaeological, historical and cultural corners of the Aegean Bronze Age. Until now, AIAS-AUFF Fellow Ester Salgarella has produced six episodes in the series, interviewing experts and researchers with a specialist knowledge of interdisciplinary and wide-ranging areas of the Aegean Bronze Age.
In her latest released episode ‘Untangling the thread: a journey through Aegean textiles,’ Ester Salgarella interviews textile tools specialist Dr. Sophia Vakirtzi from the Hellenic Ministry of Culture in Greece. Sophia Vakirtzi shares her knowledge of textiles, fabrics and fibres that were used in Bronze Age Aegean fashion, and how the study of textile tools, such as weaving equipment, spindle whorls, loom weights, imprints of threads and strings, can help reconstruct processes of prehistoric textile production and shed light on the manufacture of that period.
