Luis Buñuel’s The Exterminating Angel is a surrealist black comedy about a group of upper-class guests who, after an elegant dinner, discover that they simply cannot leave the room, even though no door is locked and no physical barrier is visible. As hours turn into days, polite routines unravel, social masks slip, and the boundaries between reason, ritual, and absurdity begin to dissolve.
At AIAS, our director Andreas Roepstorff often jokes that the institute is like Hotel California where “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave”, as a reference to fellows returning. Buñuel’s film is a playful mirror of that line, which makes us reflect on the extent to which confinement is social, not architectural.
