The position of women in science and sport improves slowly, despite driving education and innovation. As the EU noted: “Talent has no gender, but opportunity too often does.” Yet gender bias remains poorly understood—many high-achieving women avoid discussing discrimination, fearing it undermines their credibility. Women seek equal access to top competition, as men; not special treatment.

This was the spirit behind Tracy Edwards and her all-women crew in the 1989 Whitbread Ocean Race. Facing ridicule and rejection, Tracy risked everything to compete. With her crew’s support, she defied expectations and proved women belong at the top—on equal terms.
