The Book Salon's purpose is to bring together scholars from different disciplines around a literary text. We all read books all the time, but narratives and fictional worlds become meaningful in different ways, depending on your research field and background. In the salon, this becomes the start of an interdisciplinary conversation.
In this book salon, we will be reading the two short stories: Gooseberries by Anton Chekhov and The Little Virtues by Natalia Ginzburg and consider the following questions:
- “How may these stories be relevant to my research?”
- “What methods would I use to analyse them?”
- “How do they resonate with the book I recommended for the fellows’ library at AIAS?” (If relevant to you)
The two texts will be circulated shortly after your registration. Please indicate when registering, whether you are willing to share your reflections around the texts and these questions in a short presentation (around 10 minutes, no need to present a polished paper).
When presenting your reflections, it suffices to draw on the story in English. You can also look after a translation of the texts in your preferred language.
About the format
The salon format for interdisciplinary conversations has run for several years at LCE – Centre for Literature, Cognition and Emotions, University of Oslo, curated by Karin Kukkonen. If you want to read more about the previous salons, read more here.
