Abstract

Despite the ubiquity of question asking in our daily lives, very little is known about why we ask questions, what are good questions, and why some questions open possibilities while others close them. I will present laboratory studies and online games that empirically measure question asking, from creative questions about everyday objects to question-based problem solving with humans and AI. Together, this work frames question asking as a measurable cognitive ability and a powerful window into creativity, learning, and discovery.

Short Bio

Dr. Yoed Kenett is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Data and Decision Sciences at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. His research computationally and empirically investigates the role of knowledge in high-level cognition, focusing on creativity, associative thinking, memory search, and question asking, in typical and atypical populations. To investigate these issues, he applies computational tools from network science, natural language processing, machine learning, and  AI, coupled with empirical cognitive and neural research.

What is an AIAS Seminar?

The AIAS Seminar Series is a session of seminars held by the AIAS fellows, AIAS Visiting or Tandem Fellows or by other speakers proposed by the fellows. In each seminar, a fellow will present and discuss her/his current research and work-in-progress to an interdisciplinary audience for 30 minutes, closing off with 30 minutes for questions, comments and discussion.

All seminars are in-person and held in English. To attend online, please contact us at info@aias.au.dk by 9:00am on the day of the seminar as the latest to request a link.
