Abstract

I have analyzed the news flow in Russian media for the period of several years by means of agenda comparison in terms of mentions of persons. This allowed me to show how news outlets group according to news coverage policies. Particularly, the mentions of the Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny were used to calculate the Navalny Index of Censorship to demonstrate how the Kremlin was spreading its control over media during the last 10 years. In my talk, I would like to discuss how bias in the news can be detected and measured.

Short bio

Formerly Professor of Anthropology, European University at St. Petersburg, Ilya Utekhin worked in visual anthropology, anthropology of medicine, conversation analysis and cognitive science. His current project has as a departure point in his experience of developing a news aggregator showing two alternative news agenda in Russia: that of the independent media and that of the media controlled by the Kremlin.
