Abstract

Tripwire deterrence is a central feature in several of today’s most pressing international security hotspots, from Ukraine and Taiwan to Greenland. It refers to a strategy in which a powerful patron state deploys a small military force to a protégé state to signal commitment and deter aggression. But does this strategy actually work, and if so, under what conditions? The seminar will outline some propositions about when and why tripwire deployments succeed or fail in deterring potential attackers.
