Abstarct

This seminar will explore the scientific potential of colors through chemical imaging techniques. We will discuss the basics of chemical sensors and their applications in daily life and in-depth studies. The seminar will highlight the dual visualization of temperature and oxygen levels in soils essential for monitoring soil health. I will guide you on how a simple color camera can become a powerful instrument for acquiring unseen chemical gradients around us, demonstrating the intersection of chemistry, technology, and even art.

The figure above shows an experimental setup and dual visualization of temperature and oxygen levels in soil.
Left: The tank with soil contains a horizontally placed metal pipe, allowing soil heating via a 40 °C hot water flow. Right: Visualization of temperature (top) and oxygen levels (bottom) before and after hot water circulation. The images reveal significant changes in soil oxygenation, particularly near the heated pipe, showcasing the impact of temperature variations on oxygen distribution.

Short Bio

I am a postdoctoral researcher at Aarhus University, specializing in ion-selective optodes and digital color analysis. I received my Ph.D. in physical chemistry in 2021 from St. Petersburg State University in Russia. My interests also include computer simulations of sensor responses, the behavior of liquid/liquid interfaces, multivariate optical measurements, and visualizing ionic gradients. With extensive experience in theoretical and experimental analysis, my goal is to enhance the analytical capabilities of optode-based systems for environmental and biomedical applications.

What is an AIAS Seminar?

The AIAS Seminar Series is a session of seminars held by the AIAS fellows, AIAS Visiting or Tandem Fellows or by other speakers proposed by the fellows. In each seminar, a fellow will present and discuss her/his current research and work-in-progress to an interdisciplinary audience for 30 minutes, closing off with 30 minutes for questions, comments and discussion.

All seminars are in-person and held in English. To attend online, please contact Sofia Bentsen at sofia@aias.au.dk by 9:00am on the day of the semimar as the latest to request a link.
