Inland water such as lakes, rivers, and streams are estimated to release approximately 20% of the world's methane emissions, contributing significantly to global warming. Human activities such as agriculture and deforestation further worsen this situation. In response, Aarhus University's Department of Ecoscience and AIAS are hosting an international symposium on May 21-22, 2025, bringing together top researchers in the field.
The symposium will include scientific presentations, and workshops focusing on the importance of inland waters for the global greenhouse gas balance, emissions at the ecosystem level, monitoring advancements, and mitigation strategies. The objective is to promote collaboration, pinpoint research priorities, and devise innovative mitigation approaches like enhanced water management or new biotechnologies, aiming to establish a global network to combat this crucial climate issue.
