Abstract

Can the family be used as a category of analysis in much the way that race, gender and class are? The family is the place where these characteristics are taught and realised for most people; it is in the family that variation, as well as similarity, is enabled; and it is through the family that people become individuals as well as part of the group. This paper thinks about the family as a lens through which we can explain broader patterns of behaviour.

Katie Barclay is a EURIAS Fellow at AIAS and Senior Research Fellow in the ARC Centre for the History of Emotions, University of Adelaide, Australia. She is the author of the book Love, Intimacy and Power: Marriage and Patriarchy in Scotland, 1650-1850, and numerous articles on emotion and family life. She is the editor of the journal Emotions: History, Culture, Society.

What is a Fellows' Seminar?

The AIAS Fellows' Seminar is a session of seminars held by the AIAS fellow or by other speakers proposed by the fellows. In each seminar, one fellow will present and discuss his/her current research and research project, closing off with a question and discussion session.
